In 2022, we launched the EP801, the successor to our popular EP800 e-bike system. The new drive unit provides more support, offers more connectivity options, is compatible with our new battery management system and enables the revolutionary AUTO SHIFTand FREE SHIFT technologies.

The EP6 (product code EP600) was developed as an attractively priced variant for the upper mid-range. It not only provides the necessary power in well-equipped e-mountain bikes but is also installed in city and trekking bikes and in a special EP6 Cargo version in cargo bikes.

Similarities between the two e-bike drive systems

Both mid-mounted motors have a maximum torque of 85 Newton meters (Nm), a rated continuous output of 250 watts and use the second generation of our battery management system. Both are compatible with disc brakes and provide support up to a speed of 25 km/h—the standard for e-bikes. The two drive units share the natural riding feel and harmonious power output.

Differences between the EP801 & EP6: Peak power, weight & material

If you want maximum performance, ride your bike off-road a lot and value the lightest possible e-bike, the EP801 e-bike system is the way to go. The EP801 ideally balances power and weight, has excellent heat dissipation and has a state-of-the-art design. It has a peak output of 600 watts—to take the edge off the uphill rides—and a lightweight magnesium housing.

If, on the other hand, you travel a lot in urban areas, commute to work on your bike or love beautiful bike tours, the EP600 is a good, budget-friendly alternative. It scores with its versatility, sporty performance and great price-performance ratio. The EP600 has a peak output of 500 watts and a lightweight aluminum housing.

Features and technologies

Both drive units have various features and technologies. These include FINE TUNE MODE, which provides up to 15 individually adjustable support levels on request.

In addition, both new e-bike systems feature Shimano’s revolutionary approach of decoupling the chainring from the rest of the motor. This allows the chainring to rotate freely, even when the rider is standing on the pedals. The two drive units are complete with our new CUES Di2 and DEORE XT Di2 shifting systems, which, in this combination, can enable revolutionary new functions such as FREE SHIFT and AUTO SHIFT.

Furthermore, both systems are compatible with the HYPERGLIDE+ and LINKGLIDE shifting technologies, underlining our unique system integration approach.
